Nothing: Lead Design Engineer
applications to hello@designtruth.co.uk
There must be something when you can not stop thinking about Nothing.
A business littered with hype, excitement, energy, investment, intrigue and genuine anticipation for what is next.
If you have somehow missed the content, the drops, the press, the awards - Nothing is a London-based tech company on a mission to remove barriers between people and technology.
They employ 420+ staff globally, and have sold over 2 million devices.
Last summer, Nothing released Phone (1), their debut smartphone and the center of a hugely ambitious consumer tech ecosystem.
They ended last year with the release of their third product: Ear (stick), the latest addition to an audio range that's crafted with artistry, passion and innovation.
In a world where products all look the same, Nothing do not want to just make the same thing as everyone else. What they want is to create iconic products that they are proud to share with family and friends. And that means they have to do things differently. This is the spirit that drives and sustains everything Nothing do.
As part of strategic growth, Nothing are building a team of Design Engineers in their small design studio in Kings Cross, London.
Looking to build a team with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, you will be embedded within the Industrial Design Team, and will use your expertise in engineering, materials and manufacturing, as well as your sensitivity for design, to realise product concepts, and defend the vision throughout the product development process.
What is integral to the long-term development of this team is a ‘Lead Design Engineer’ to remain hands-on.
This is an environment where your impact will be immediately felt. Although there is a pathway to management, this comes with a start-up mentality and for that you need to be someone who loves nothing more than a workshop, solving problems with a proactive edge: you need to be both independent and assured but collaborative in nature.
As a team, Design practice covers a wide range of disciplines - Industrial Design, Engineering, Experience & Interaction Design, CMF, Connectivity, Sound, Emerging Technologies and more.
This is not a design position. Whilst an appreciation for it aligns with the values of the business, your primary responsibility is design engineering.
You sit as a bridge between design and engineering.
Working at pace, working with flexibility, getting things done, making things happen. Your career to date - time served understanding Far East manufacturing, supply chains, physical consumer product - will be the backbone to you succeeding here.
… and success at Nothing is at a different scale to anything else you see in our industry.
As they scale, you will help shape this role and the one that follows. We hope this excites you - shaping your own destiny rather than being held by constraint.
There is interest in starting conversations with those at a variety of different points in their career, but currently there is no scope for a junior hire.
Salary
With this being a new hire in a new department, Nothing have not set an initial salary guideline for this hire.
We can assure you based on the conversations we have had, they will comfortably fall in line with the Design Truth salary guide which is often used as an industry standard.
Remote Working
There is an appetite and openness for remote working.
You will however have to be accessible to Nothing’s studio in Kings Cross, and most likely be there several days per week.
Early on in the role you will spend a lot of time in the office.
Interview Process
This recruitment process will begin with an initial virtual conversation with the Design team at Nothing.
An amazing opportunity for you to understand the company and the people within it in more detail.
You will then be asked for a more technical interview face-to-face.
It is a very fluid recruitment process.
